Answering Questions About My Domestic Violence - A Guest Blog Series from Arianna Shanks-Hill

Having the platform of domestic violence in the pageant world raises a lot of questions from people. Usually in interview or on stage question, without a doubt I will be on the receiving end of some uncomfortable or unorthodox questions. However, lately I am trying to answer these questions from a place of compassion rather than immediately being defensive. I can understand the curiosity of someone who might not be familiar with survivors of domestic violence or domestic violence in general; I can also understand that if you haven’t been educated on what is and is not appropriate to ask survivors you will just blurt out whatever curiosities you have in hopes of better understanding. I know that these questions do not come from a place of malice, but I also know that as a survivor with a substantial platform it is my job to educate others. So, with that, here are a list of questions I’ve been asked that are on the “do not ask” list; and my personal answers to said questions, just to curb that curiosity that drives people to ask them.

Is it hard to talk about abuse and advocate to end domestic violence with the experiences that you have had?

While this question is not inherently harmful, it seems to have an obvious answer. Of course it’s hard. Why would it be easy? Survivors who come forward, especially in such a public format, are (unfortunately) willingly submitting themselves to questioning, ridicule, harassment, and assumptions in order to do what’s right and protect those around them. I’d also like to point out that it is never the survivors job to educate others on how to properly interact with other survivors. We are not training guides or introductory courses on domestic violence and survivor handling; we are living, breathing humans with trauma who are trying to navigate the world as best we can. While I will always take the time to educate others, not everyone has the capacity or the willingness to do so.

Now, as promised, here is my answer in hopes that it prevents this question from being asked again:

Yes. It is gut-wrenching and exhausting and extremely difficult. It takes a lot of strength and a lot of bravery to stand in front of an auditorium full of people that you don’t know and share your most intimate personal experiences. But, anything that is worth talking about is probably hard to talk about. It is imperative that people with platforms like mine speak up and speak out so that other people feel like they have that opportunity as well. The difficulty of telling and re-telling my story is nothing compared to the passion that i have to protect, educate, and positively impact others.

There are days when I go to appearances and speak about my story with strength and without a single tremor in my voice. There are days when I tell my story and my hands shake so hard the microphone can barely pick up my voice. There have been countless interviews where I have cried trying to speak about the things that I have experienced, and that does not make me weak. Sometimes I create videos for instagram and cry the minute I turn the camera off. Sometimes I get in my car after a meeting or a speech and have a panic attack purely from having the experience of reliving my abuse while I tell my story. All of these times my bravery was evident and unwavering.

I remember the minute that I realized that no one was coming to save me. Actually, I remember it to the second. I remember because even after I was free from my abuser I spent months holding my tongue, hoping and praying for the harassment from him and his friends to stop and for everything to be over. I remember being so afraid of the consequences of speaking out that I chose silence instead. And then I realize if he could do that to me, he could do that to someone else. I remember thinking that someone should say something. Someone should call him out. Someone should do it or else he will keep doing it without repercussions to every girl he meets.

Slowly I came to the conclusion that if anyone was going to do it, it had to be me. No one was going to advocate for me. No one was going to advocate for those other girls. No one was going to take a stand unless I did it myself. So that’s what I did. for better or for worse, on the good days or the hard days. I stood up, said enough is enough and told my story to the world.

After spending such an extensive time in silence, being afraid of the consequences of telling the truth, it is extremely freeing and and extremely healing to use my story for good to help others. Every time I share my passion for advocacy with the world, a piece of me heals and gets stronger. I am empowered by my experiences, not weakened by them. I have never been a victim of what happened to me, I became a warrior because of it and it is my greatest honor to be her.

I am hope and I am the future and I will continue to share my story and advocate even when it is hard because I know I have the power to create positive change.

Committing to Confidence - a Blog Series by Katelyn Andrist

This week I am focusing on letting go of resentment.

I asked myself “How do I truly let go of resentment?”

1. Accept what has happened

2. Forgiveness
3. Understanding I can not control everything
4. Try not to be a “people-pleaser”
5. Be more assertive with setting boundaries and following them
6. Be mindful of what you are saying, feeling, and thinking
7. It is a projection of what they are experiencing - it has nothing to do with me

Resentment is a negative emotion – feelings of frustration and disappointment because you were mistreated or wronged by another person. Those are valid feelings, 110% BUT, you have the power over your emotions. You are stronger than your emotions.

Next time you are experiencing resentment – try to replace resentment with love.

Love always wins.

The Time I “Accidentally” Became A Beauty Queen - by Wendy Araujo

Well, an “unrealistic” dream became very much realistic. My name is Wendy Araujo and I am the 100th Miss San Antonio for 2023! To have that title is still incredibly surreal for me, as I and others thought this would never happen to me. If you had asked younger Wendy who would only wear sparkly dresses, plastic tiaras and her mommy’s jewels if she knew she’d become a beauty queen one day, she would cry because she wouldn’t like you lying to her.

I grew up watching pageantry at a very young age. I watched every pageant system ranging from state competitions, to Miss International and even Miss Universe! You would think that I was enamored with all the glitz and glamour, but you’d be wrong. I was in love with the way these women spoke from the heart and how they commanded attention whenever they walked into the room. I dreamt of being exactly like those women. If not completely, I’d take a third of it.

My journey coming into the Miss America Organization was anything but normal, at least to me. I was going through a huge imposter syndrome moment in my life shortly after losing my father unexpectedly in January of 2020 and I wasn’t sure if I needed to be doing anything differently in my life. I didn’t think much of it until the following days after I asked for a sign of change in my life if I needed it, I kept being given signs of pageantry. I had a small local pageant flyer (for 3-10 year olds, not MAO related) sitting on the windshield of my car and no other car around mine had said flyer. The very next day, I kept getting newsletters from all sorts of pageant systems even though I had never enrolled to be a part of them. Then the following week, Miss Texas 2022 Averie Bishop, announced on instagram that she was hosting 4 free informational sessions for those who were interested in the Miss America Organization, and becoming a competitor.

All those consistent signs were trying to tell me this was the change I needed in my life, and I will be very honest that I was extremely hesitant and nervous. I ended up taking a leap of faith and went to Averie’s informational session and came out winning a random draw prize consisting of Averie paying my Miss America registration fee ($35) and my first local fee ($75). I walked out feeling uneasy until I realized that this truly was meant to be, and not an accident. I followed through with my prize and redeemed it at the 2023 Miss Plano/Richardson Organization pageant, my very first pageant. Even though I walked away empty handed, I walked out a whole new person and with an insane amount of interest from other local organizations and support from new-found friends.

I contemplated just calling it quits after the 1st local only because since this sport is very foreign to me, I wasn’t sure where to begin working on to improve, and didn’t have access to coaches, prep, etc. After having many titleholders encouraging me to keep going, and other directors wanting to speak with me, I became more motivated to figure out what my new game plan was going to be, because I was determined to win a title for the 2023 season at that point. It didn’t take me on my 2nd try, and not my 3rd try, nor my 4th. After I competed at my 4th local, I was approached by a man and his husband introducing themselves as the directors of the Miss San Antonio Organization and wanted to extend an invitation for me to compete for them, but I quickly became discouraged because I had all of my support telling me that I was going to walk away with my own title, yet the exact opposite was happening at every local.

My sister quickly signed me up on my behalf to compete for them, well knowing I was soon moving to San Marcos for school, and it would make the most sense if I became the next San Antonio representative... That’s if I ended up winning that local after every loss I went through.

There was a week break from the 4th local I did until the 5th local (MSAO) and I went into what would unknowingly be my last local of the season with an open mind, an open heart with a grateful attitude. And then it happened, I won. I truly thought it was an accident, just like when Steve Harvey famously named Miss Colombia 2015 the new Miss Universe when in fact Miss Philippines truly won Miss Universe 2015. As realization further sunk in that that was not the case, every feeling hit me all at once. After all the tears, cries, and congratulations wore off, I had a revelation; I was placed here on purpose and not by accident like I made myself believe.

If there is anything I’d like for you and anyone to take away from this story, it is to NEVER BELIEVE you are accidentally placed somewhere where you don't think you belong.

If you weren’t capable, the opportunity would have never come your way. You belong.

Committing to Confidence - a Blog Series by Katelyn Andrist

"The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same."

- Colin R. Davis

In life, your journey will never be linear with trying to accomplish your goals. However, everything in time is working for you.

Your failures are leading you closer to your success and your success is leading you closer to your failures. You have to have BOTH.

Failure + Success = Best Version of Yourself.

Work Hard. Think Hard. Be Consistent.

Do not fear your future or failures – embrace them.
